EXTRA/PRACTICE QUESTIONS on simple classical genetics

You can view these questions in a decent size format by clicking on them and, if you want, print them out (on recycled or reused paper) and bring them to class.

A friendly reminder: these practice questions are the result of a lot of work. Some of them were designed by the author at the request of "her" students, others directly with "her" students during BIOL334 tutorials. As they represent creative work in a tangible form, they are subjected to copyright. You (BIOL334 Summer 2007 students) have the author's permission to use them, copy them, modify them, etc.
HOWEVER, they are not for sale in any way, shape or form.

If you would like to solve one or more of them and write out step-by-step answer keys, you are very welcome to do so (and to sell your answer keys!), but please let me know.

Diagrams and summary on meiosis

I tried to draw out a series of diagrams showing how a dihybrid individual (di=we are looking at 2 genes, hybrid=heterozygous) can produce 4 types of gametes. Let me know if you have any questions about it-if this remains unclear, it's going to be a disaster when we get into recombination and rearrangements!

Please note that these quick summaries do not replace, by any means your class/tutorial notes! The reason why I post them is that a number of previous BIOL334 students said they found them useful. Let me know if they work for you, or what you'd like to see on this site!

MEIOSIS STUFF

Today we reviewed meiosis and had a look at it from a purely genetic perspective.
Samples of your meiosis art will be posted shortly, as well as some practice questions and a quick summary on ploidy, number of chromatids, the relationship between a chromosome and the double helix, etc.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we'll work on classical genetics problems:
Chapter 2, #11, 24, 32
+ extra practice problems (time permitting).

We'll also review some probability, as well as the main terms used in genetics.

See you in class!

Pam

PS- IMPORTANT NOTES FOR OUR "GUESTS" (those who are not in T07):
since different TAs go through the course material in slightly different ways and order, many of the quick daily summaries may not make sense to you. Don't panic, in the end everybody will go through all the material. You are very welcome to attempt our practice questions, but please direct all enquiries to the author (i.e. post them on this blog). Also, please mention which tutorial section you are in when you leave a comment.
Thank you, have fun!
